BEYOND THE RAINBOW WAS INSPIRING AND MEANINGFUL
PRESENTED BY SONOMA VALLEY PRIDE
In collaboration with Wake UP Sonoma, Out in The Vineyard and Matthew Long Design.
You could feel the connecting fibers throughout the historic Sebastiani Theatre on Sunday March 15th - and although not a full house, the energy, respect and learning felt visceral and important. Suzanne Ford, Executive Director of SF Pride was graced on the stage with the film maker, Antonio Contreras, and Nguyen Pham, the SF Pride board President prior to Suzannes term. Suzanne is the first transgender woman to hold this office. Nguyen is the first Asian american to hold his previous position as well. Both were the subjects of the documentary “Beyond The Rainbow” by Antonio. Following the documentary there was a panel discussion, and Q&A that went deep and personal and we all left there feeling closer to something special. We were also very lucky to have a pretty good-sized contingency of Dykes on Bikes from SF Pride who rode up to Sonoma Valley to provide a warm welcome for the movie team’s screening, and we were thrilled with the love and energy that came with them.

March 31st is the National Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), an annual event celebrated dedicated to honoring transgender people, raising awareness about discrimination they face, and acknowledging their contributions to society. The showing of this documentary felt appropriate given the proximity to that important date. In these times, transgender visibility can be dangerous, yet we felt the celebration of this visibility amongst friends, Allies, parents and the transgender community this day. We are so thankful for this community that came to celebrate this film with us, as well as to congratulate this team on their work and accomplishment. Everyone needs access to healthcare, yet healthcare is becoming increasingly unaffordable. Most other industrialized nations offer healthcare to all their residents. A single-payer healthcare system can end financial barriers to care by doing away with premiums, deductibles, and other out-of pocket costs that mainly support the insurance industry. Can California lead the way for the rest of our country and enact single-payer?

Find out more on Monday, March 23 at 6:30 PM at the Sonoma Valley Democrats Virtual General Meeting when Terry Winter, RN, presents "Now is the Time for Single-Payer in CA." Terry has worked in Sonoma County as a registered nurse and specialist in health policy for 40 years. He is now on the leadership team of the Healthcare for All Working Group.
